Are modern computers faster than they were 15 years ago?

I'd like to get people's opinions on this subject as I'm not so sure we've advanced that much.

Yes, processing speeds trounce the days of the 486 DX and I'm not even going to mention the old Sinclair's with 1kb of memory. But software is using it as quickly as designers can create it. Adobe 6's demands were tiny compared to 9, for example. And Windows 3.1 vs Vista...

So. Are today's computers breathtakingly speedy and nimble? Or are they a bloated mess of operating systems and that have not gained anything in the past 15 years since I was at university?

From Twitter - lightoverwater@robashwell20 computers today maybe faster but we ask them to do so much more they choke and die. tried a mac lately? they work ok ;) hehe!
