Neil Armstrong first stepped out of the Eagle lander on the 20th of July 1969. For most of the world it was the 21st but NASA is American so I guess we can give them that.
The moon lander project was seen then, as it should have been, as the biggest technological challenge ever faced. It captured the minds of the US, and probably the world.
Yet, for such a challenge, the technology behind it was hardly... (sorry)... rocket science. The astronauts made calculations using abacuses and a computer that is less powerful than today's mobile phones. Yet they made it.
Yet, space travel quickly disappeared off the zeitgeist. And, so I'd love to know what members think the next big challenge is?
Environmental?
Military?
Agricultural?
And, of course, why?
