Debate: what's the next big technological challenge?

Neil Armstrong first stepped out of the Eagle lander on the 20th of July 1969. For most of the world it was the 21st but NASA is American so I guess we can give them that. The moon lander project was seen then, as it should have been, as the biggest technological challenge ever faced. It captured the minds of the US, and probably the world.Yet, for such a challenge, the technology behind it was hardly... (sorry)... rocket science. The astronauts made calculations using abacuses and a computer…See More

Gartner: Semico market to shrink by 22pc in 2009

Gartner has today announced that worldwide semiconductor revenue is forecast to reach $198 billion in 2009. That's a 22.4 percent decline from 2008 revenue of $255 billion. On the positive side, this outlook is better (just) than the first quarter projections - which had a predicted decline of 24.1 percent. Not looking good really. Unless you're in solar. This sector has been removed from Gartner's figures because it's growth is skewing the overall picture. So the insider tip, put your money…See More

Are modern computers faster than they were 15 years ago?

I'd like to get people's opinions on this subject as I'm not so sure we've advanced that much.Yes, processing speeds trounce the days of the 486 DX and I'm not even going to mention the old Sinclair's with 1kb of memory. But software is using it as quickly as designers can create it. Adobe 6's demands were tiny compared to 9, for example. And Windows 3.1 vs Vista...So. Are today's computers breathtakingly speedy and nimble? Or are they a bloated mess of operating systems and that have not…See More

Could it be the end of flash memory?

What are the sweetest phrases in the English language? This pizza makes you thinner and more attractive has a good ring to it. But so does, this memory will hold four times as much data as flash currently can and do it 10 times as fast. But that's what a piece in today's…See More
