I recently saw 2 articles in same EDN newsletter that are curious to me as they present 2 views on the continuing debate over "More Moore" or "More than Moore" (also curiously written by Suzanne Deffree):
The first article is with Rene Penning de Vries, CTO of NXP entitled "Moving beyond Moore" (http://www.edn.com/article/CA6670961.html) . In the article Rene notes that scaling down the Moore's Law curve is do-able technically however he questions the economics of it.
In the second blog post; "Welcome to New York, Global Foundries" Suzanne comments on the $4.2 Billion investment into building a brand new, leading edge fab in New York - one which Suzanne welcomes as a New Yorker.
So whats the future "More Moore" or "More than Moore"?
Personally speaking (from this "Moor"), I see less opportunity (and demand) in greater complexity on the linear scaling path of Moore's Law and more in integration of technologies such as RF Mems, photonics, lab on a chip etc. - even using what we already have with packaging integration such as SIP and POP.
Hence my view is "Moore than Moore" is where we need to go - but what do I know?
What's your view?
